This Dax Tojeiro De Dion 427 Cobra needs no introduction! If you’re in the market for a Cobra replica you’ll already know about the Dax. The company began as DJ Sportscars in 1968, and were the first to make an AC Cobra replica kit. John Tojeiro, designer of the original AC Ace chassis, was a director in the 1970s - and the decades of refinement that Dax has built into its Cobras shows through in their quality, from the fit and finish of the glassfibre mouldings, right through to the details of the construction and thought behind minor details. Without spending significantly more money, you will not find a better Cobra recreation than a Dax.
The current owner commissioned the professional construction of this absolutely stunning car in 2007. The build was undertaken by well-known Cobra replica guru Dave Brookes of DB Replicas – who has literally hundreds of Cobra builds under his belt and is incredibly well respected on the scene.
Since the build and subsequent IVA test, the car has been MOT tested almost every year, and has covered around 10,500 miles. Current MOT expires in April 2024 and the car is ready to drive away.
Brief spec as follows:
-
Ford Imperial Blue with white stripes
-
Colour coded Le Mans hardtop, complete with sidescreens and trimmed in suede
-
Cream leather interior with beautifully trimmed blue carpets – boot area also trimmed very nicely indeed. Moto Lita wood-rim steering wheel and fully functional gauges.

17” Hallibrand style wheels with faux aluminium spinners
-
Small Block Chevy (5700cc) coupled to a competition TCI Automatic gearbox (incredibly slick and agile unit, no slush-box here!)
-
4-into-1 side exit pipes
-
De Dion chassis
-
Stainless steel lined engine bay
-
Tonneau cover
-
Nudge bars and exhaust heat shields also included along with the currently fitted quick-lifts.
The car presents very excellently and attracts a HUGE amount of attention. The paint finish is deep and reflects very nicely indeed, as you can see in the pictures. The quality of the Dax kit is excellent - there is absolutely no crazing of fibreglass anywhere at all. All of the panelwork fits well, the doors close beautifully and the car sits excellently! Cosmetically, there are of course a few imperfections as the car was painted over 15 years ago. There are some areas of microblistering in the paint which can be seen under close scrutiny. However these really don’t detract much from the overall appearance and certainly don’t constitute a need for a repaint – I’m just very fussy and like to describe the car as accurately as possible!
The interior is a lovely place to be - clean and tidy, and very nicely trimmed. Cream leather seats, blue carpets with cream edging, a Moto Lita Steering wheel, smoked sun visors, 3-leg roll bars and Willans harnesses complete the look. A full tonneau is also included. Again, some minor marks here and there due to use, but nothing that lets the car down in any way.
A ‘Le Mans’ style hardtop with opening rear hatch, allowing access to the boot. This was an expensive option so really adds to the car’s desirability. It fits very well indeed, and is easily removable (less than 5 minutes) – it completely changes the character of the car and looks absolutely fantastic. Nudge bars, over-riders and exhaust heat shields are also included but not currently fitted – the owner prefers the cleaner look with the quick-lifts installed instead, and I think I agree!
Mechanically, all appears to be in fine fettle – the small block Chevy engine fires into life easily and sounds absolutely fantastic! It ticks over nicely and pulls very strongly indeed. Oil pressure is just where it should be when both hot and cold, and the thermostatically controlled fan keeps the temperature in check. Since the build, the car has had ongoing maintenance including the usual oil and filter changes, along with various other minor things including a new starter motor a couple of years ago. All of the electrics function as they should. The automatic gearbox is a joy to use (don’t let it put you off, it’s a competition-based unit from TCI transmissions, not a slushbox out of an old pickup!!) – it does exactly what you want it to, kicking down instantly and is incredibly responsive. It makes cruising an absolute pleasure but doesn’t detract from the overall driving experience at all.
Overall, the car presents in very nice condition indeed. As already mentioned, please do not expect a show car. If you’re looking for an example that can be used without worry, with some scope for minor improvement here and there, then this is probably the car for you! It’s been priced very sensibly, to appeal to those people looking for a really nice basis to make an already good car absolutely excellent.
The car has only covered a few hundred miles over the last few years – as to be expected, the car will require ongoing love and TLC as and when it’s pressed back into regular use. These cars are just about as visceral as it gets – they’re loud, brash, dare I say it – slightly agricultural!! The steering is heavy, they need to be DRIVEN - they are not for the faint hearted! Do not expect this car to behave like an MX5…!
There is a collection of paperwork relating to the build and registration of the car, along with MOTs etc since. The V5 logbook is present and the car is correctly registered.
Serious enquiries only please. This car is being sold on behalf of a client, and RMC Classics Ltd are solely acting as agents in the sale. The car is sold as seen and inspected.
The vehicle is being stored at the owner’s address in Leigh, Greater Manchester – please contact us to arrange a viewing (with us in attendance). Please note that the private numberplate will be removed before sale and the car will revert to its original 2007 plate!
